Avon Colorado Condos

Avon, Colorado, perches at around 8000 feet above sea level in the spectacular Rocky Mountains and is located about 8 miles west of Vail. Over the last several years, the permanent population of this unique mountain town has doubled to about 6,700+ residents and the town supports another 3,500 part-time residents. This stunning town sits in the heart of the Eagle River valley and has a wealth of attractions and activities that will interest the most discriminating tastes.

The earliest inhabitants were the Ute Indians and the first travelers through this area were probably mountain men who trapped beaver. The town of Avon has a long history that began with one of the early settlers, George A. Townsend, who settled there in the early 1880’s. In the 1920’s, the town and the surrounding area raised head lettuce, iced it down in box cars, and shipped it as far as the east coast. Because the lettuce season was over in the east, this was a very profitable venture. The town of Avon was not incorporated until 1978.

This warm, friendly town enjoys a fairly temperate climate with four seasons. The average high temperatures range from 33 degrees fahrenheit in January to around 80 degrees in July. The average low temperatures range from around 4 degrees in January to 45 degrees in August. The average rainfall is around 18 inches annually and is fairly consistent with one to two inches each month. Annual snowfall totals around 34 inches and, although some may fall in April and October, the warm afternoons should quickly dissipate any left on the ground.

In the summer, whether you enjoy walking in the 48 acres of Nottingham park or are a fan of kayaking, there are recreation possibilities to suit all tastes. Snow skiing, ice skating and ice hockey are all favorite winter activities. The town has a recreation center that includes a water slide, swimming pool, and fitness equipment. Inclement weather will not stop you from keeping in shape.

A favorite Avon event is the Salute to the USA that includes one of the largest fireworks displays in the Rockies. In 2015, Avon will host the 2015 World Alpine Ski Championships that bring in ski racers from 70 different countries. This will take place February 3-15, 2015. Since Avon is hosting the event, there will be teams and press staying in the town. Residents and visitors will be able to watch many of the races.
